Will AI Replace Every Developer Role? A Sober Take
LLMs ship code faster than ever, but most engineering roles aren't going anywhere. Here's what actually changes, what doesn't, and how to adapt.
The question lands in every leadership meeting we attend: if Copilot, Cursor, and Claude Code can write production code, why do we still need a 30-person engineering team? It's a fair question, and the honest answer is more nuanced than either the "AI will replace us all" camp or the "it's just autocomplete" camp want to admit.
After shipping AI-assisted workflows with clients across fintech, industrial IoT, and SaaS platforms in 2024-2025, here's our read on which development roles are genuinely threatened, which are being reshaped, and which are becoming more valuable.
What LLMs actually do well in 2025
Current-generation coding agents — Claude Code, Cursor Composer, GitHub Copilot Workspace, Aider, Devin — are genuinely good at:
- Translating clear specs into idiomatic code in mainstream languages
- Writing unit tests for existing functions
- Refactoring within a well-typed codebase
- Generating boilerplate (CRUD endpoints, DTOs, migrations)
- Explaining unfamiliar code and suggesting fixes for stack traces
On SWE-bench Verified, frontier models now resolve 60-70% of curated real-world GitHub issues. That's a real number, and it's why junior-level tickets are the first to feel the squeeze.
Where they still fail consistently:
- Cross-service reasoning in large monorepos with implicit conventions
- Non-functional requirements (latency budgets, cost ceilings, failure modes)
- Debugging distributed systems from partial telemetry
- Negotiating trade-offs with product and compliance stakeholders
- Anything requiring accountability when it breaks at 3 a.m.

The uncomfortable truth: the traditional junior-to-senior ladder is breaking. If juniors don't ship tickets, how do they become seniors? That's the industry's real problem, not "AI replaces everyone."
The shift: from writing code to specifying and verifying it
The unit of work is moving up the stack. Instead of writing a function, you're writing the spec, the tests, and the guardrails — then reviewing what the agent produces. This is closer to how staff engineers already operate.

The engineer owns the contract and the tests. The agent writes the implementation. Review focuses on correctness, security, and performance — not syntax.
What senior engineers should be doing now
A practical checklist we give engineering leaders:

README,CONTRIBUTING, ADRs, and a/docs/agents/folder with conventions - [ ] Invest in evals, not just tests: golden datasets for AI-generated PRs, regression checks on prompt changes

- [ ] Measure the right metric: cycle time per feature, not lines of code or commits
- [ ] Keep a human in the loop for: auth, payments, data migrations, schema changes, IaC in prod
- [ ] Rewrite your hiring bar: system design, code review, and debugging under ambiguity matter more than LeetCode
- [ ] Rebuild the junior pipeline: pair juniors with agents on reviewed work; don't skip the fundamentals
The roles that actually grow
Two categories are expanding fast in our client base:
- AI platform engineers — people who build the internal scaffolding: retrieval pipelines, eval harnesses, guardrails, cost controls, agent orchestration (LangGraph, Temporal, custom). This barely existed as a title in 2022.
- Applied AI product engineers — full-stack developers who understand token economics, latency budgets for LLM calls, and how to design UX around non-deterministic outputs.
Both pay 20-40% above equivalent non-AI roles in the European market right now.
So, will every dev job disappear?
No — but the shape of the job changes for almost everyone. The developers who thrive in the next five years will be the ones who treat LLMs as a very fast, very confident junior teammate: useful, unreliable, and in need of supervision. The ones who refuse to use them will be out-shipped 3-to-1. The ones who blindly trust them will be on the front page of a breach report.
